Digital

For my final images, I also did a photo of the entire canvas in order to capture the texture and colour difference it produces. You can see the difference in the two images above.
While the canvas image actually produces an image with defects, I think it fits with my concept well. Due to the nature of photography, the colour hasn't been produced exactly, the lighting varies a little across the image and there are some defects in the corners.
This would be an issue if i was aiming to create a seamless digital image, but it's that's not what i've been trying to.
I think it gives it an added roughness that brings it closer towards a painting, which inevitable has faults due to the nature of painting. The canvas also brings out the colour and a texture that really begins to look painted.
Wrap-up:
Pros:
- I think i've been successful in reaching an image that really looks like it could have been painted
- The composition works well for the brief - being on the edge of structure and randomness. There is a definite structure to forms, both individually and as a whole. There is a focus on the black and white lines, and the eye sort follows them from the top left down to the bottom right. (This is feedback i've been given, not just my opinion). But overall you get a sense of chaos and free strokes, as if this was a very expressive painting.
- I really like the colour scheme. While the red was effective too, it was too harsh and intense (naturally, because red is generally a harsh, eye catching colour). The blue/green is much more subtle and calming, and i think it allows you to study the details more, whereas the red had more of a dramatic impression but was harder to look at.
- The canvas solidifies the painting appearance.
Cons:
- I choose to do this on a very large screen of 3000 x 2000 pixels (so that i could do a large print without losing quality) but it did make for a pretty slow work flow. Each image took up to 10minutes to produce.
- There small white dots have a definite computer generated feel to them, as a lot of them are perfectly in curved lines (which would be very hard to do by hand i think). So that detracts a little from the free hand painting aesthetic, but they are such small details i dont know if people would notice.
- I think i rejected some really cool images, simply because i felt like i had to keep going. I don't know if that's a negative, but i probably need to learn when to stop changing things!
